Michael W. Smith, LICSW, CEAP

Mr. Smith is the Associate Director of Affirmative Action Programs in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action at Georgetown University. In his capacity as Associate Director, Mr. Smith conducts internal discrimination investigations and responds to external discrimination complaints, conducts training on such topics as sexual harassment, employment discrimination prevention and managing respecting diversity and preventing workplace harassment, consults with department heads and university officials on equity and discrimination matters, assists with compliance matters related to the University’s Affirmative Action Plan and federal obligations and assists with the Local, Small, Disadvantaged, Business Enterprise (LSDBE) program. Mr. Smith serves on University committees such as the Diversity Action Council, the Sexual Assault Working Group and the Mission and Pastoral Care Advisory Committee, Georgetown University Hospital.

Previously, Mr. Smith was the Associate Director of the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at Georgetown University from 1996-1999. In this capacity, he provided short-term assessment, counseling and referral, conflict management interventions and consultations to departments concerning behavioral matters in the workplace. Mr. Smith has also directed the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at American University. From 1987-1995 Mr. Smith was a clinician at the Howard University Counseling Service, where he provided mental health services to students, served as a member of the training staff for social work and psychology interns and managed the employee assistance program contract with the Greater Southeast Community Hospital Heathcare System.

Mr. Smith is a member of the American Association for Affirmative Action, the Washington Regional Task Force Against Campus Prejudice and the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Georgetown University in 1978 and his Masters in Social Work from Howard University in 1981.
