Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment is the period each year (October 15 - November 15) when employees have an opportunity to elect or make changes to certain benefit plans offered by Georgetown University to faculty and staff. Elections made during open enrollment generally take effect the following January 1.
During Open Enrollment the Office of Faculty and Staff Benefits provides all benefits-eligible employees with Open Enrollment newsletters and guides, hosts informational outreach sessions, fairs, and enrollment labs.

The following plans are subject to Open Enrollment rules:

These Open Enrollment rules are outlined in the Internal Revenue Code and all Employers who sponsor benefit plans subject to these rules must comply with them. Additionally, any policies an employer makes regarding their benefit plans must be consistent with these Open Enrollment rules.

These rules, and our policy, state that once you make your elections regarding plan participation, your elections must remain in effect for the entire plan year.  Please note this applies even if you choose to pay for your insurance premiums with post-tax dollars.

Insurance Premiums

New for 2008

Enhanced Survivor Benefits
Georgetown University is pleased to provide new business travel accident (BTA) coverage and an increased basic life/basic AD&D insurance benefit - increased from $5,000 to $20,000 - at no cost to faculty, AAP and staff.  Additional enhancements include voluntary AD&D for employee and family and increased maximums for supplemental life and dependent life coverage.  As of January 1, 2008, MetLife will be the insurer of these benefits for Georgetown University.

Most supplemental life participants will see a decrease in their monthly rate for 2008.  During this initial open enrollment, eligible employees will have a one-time opportunity to increase their supplemental life coverage by one times salary up to a maximum of $500,000 without evidence of insurability; likewise, increases in spoual life coverage can be made up to $30,000 without evidence of insurability.  Additional increases to coverage may be made during this time.  Approval will be subject to a simplified underwriting process for this open enrollment.

Supplemental life, voluntary AD&D, and dependent life elections and changes are limited to upon first being hired and during open enrollment.
