Apply to Graduate School
Check out the programs available in your area of interest:
- The Career Center Library houses the Peterson's Guide to Graduate Schools which is useful for obtaining lists of graduate schools. View the guide online at petersons.com.
- Request applications and promotional materials in late August or early September the year prior to the date you are seeking admission.
- Rankings for many graduate school programs may be found in US News & World Report and Business Week (for MBA programs).
- Ask the admissions office of the school you are researching if you can speak with a current student, faculty member, or alum to get an insider’s perspective of the program.
Admissions Tests:
- If required, aim to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) no later than December of the year prior to the fall you are seeking admission. You may also need to take a subject test (refer to the program's application). Visit the GRE Web site for more information.
- Prepare by investing in a GRE practice book and take several practice tests under "practice" conditions. Becoming familiar with the style and timing of the tests may boost your scores. Some students elect to participate in practice courses such as Kaplan or Princeton Review.
- For MBA programs, plan to take the GMAT no later than December of the year prior to the fall you are seeking admission. Visit the GMAT Web site for more information.
- Some schools require you to take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Visit the Miller Analogies Web site for more information.
Recommendations and Transcripts:
- Most programs request three letters of recommendation. In early fall, contact three individuals to ask if they would be willing to write recommendations. Possible recommenders are professors, past or current employers, advisors, and coaches. Many individuals writing recommendations request a résumé to help them review your activities and experiences.
- Each academic program will have different instructions for transcript submission. Read the application thoroughly.
- Consider setting up a credentials file through Interfolio.com if you will be applying to graduate schools a year or more after you graduate.
The application:
- Complete your application. Get others to review your personal statement (like your academic advisor).
- Submit your application as early as possible. Rolling admissions are common and your chances are better if you apply early.
Financing:
- Contact the programs to which you applied to see what awards, scholarships, and fellowships are available.
- Check out financial aid loans through the graduate school’s financial aid office.
- Make note of important deadlines for financial aid packages and fellowships.
