Where are you serving?
I am serving as part of the Teacher Collaboration and Community Outreach project. I work with Thai English teachers to make their lessons more student-centered.
What is your assignment?
Friday is my 'community day,' when I work with community groups on health and HIV/AIDS outreach, youth development, and small business development. Outreach is my secondary project – the amount of involvement in the community varies depending on each volunteer’s interests.
Why did you join the Peace Corps?
I joined the Peace Corps for a few reasons. I knew I wasn't ready for graduate school or a full-time job; I wanted to pursue a career in development, policy, or service; and I wanted to try something completely different.
Is the Peace Corps what you thought it would be like?
When most people think of Peace Corps, they think of living in a hut in Africa, but it varies so much from country to country, and even within countries.
How have you adjusted to your new surroundings?
Nothing can prepare you for the intricacies of a particular culture and how you will react to completely new surroundings; I have been here almost 10 months and I learn something new about myself and my surroundings every day.
What advice would you give current Georgetown students thinking about the Peace Corps?
Peace Corps is incredibly hard, and it will change you forever, but if you love to learn and have an open mind it could be the experience of a lifetime.
