Five Things You Should Consider Doing

Georgetown University's MBNA Career Education Center ("CEC") offers many services for students interested in law school. If you think you might be interested in law, here are five things you should consider doing:

1. Meet with your Pre-Law Advisor.  Stop by the CEC front desk to schedule a thirty minute pre-law advising appointment.  During your appointment, you can explore why you are considering law school, discuss relevant internship opportunities, identify potential law schools, or address any other related concerns.  You can also meet with the Pre-Law Advisor during a fifteen minute walk-in appointment.  Walk-in appointments are generally held from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. Walk-in appointments give you an opportunity to have your résumé reviewed or to ask narrowly focused questions, such as "Should I cancel my LSAT score?" or "Do you think I need another recommendation?"

2. Attend a pre-law workshop.  Your Pre-Law Advisor regularly schedules workshops.  The most popular workshop is titled, "Whether, When and How to Apply to Law School?" and is a great introduction to the application process.  A second workshop addresses "How to Write a Personal Statement".  Other workshops are held throughout the year.  Check the pre-law calendar for upcoming workshops.

3. Visit the Career Education Center library.  Located on the first floor of the CEC, the library includes a pre-law section.  Here, you can browse through law school catalogs and review many books and articles that discuss law school, legal careers, and related topics.

4. Attend a law school visit.  Each fall, a number of law schools send admissions representatives to the Georgetown campus to meet with groups of potential applicants.  Occasionally, law schools schedule one-on-one meetings with applicants.   Law school visits will be listed on the pre-law calendar.

5. Allow yourself to consider other careers.  Law school is not right for everyone.  You can work with the Pre-Law Advisor and meet with a Career Counselor and/or Employment Advisor at the CEC to discuss career options.  Law school is a huge commitment; you owe it to yourself to consider other possibilities.  Take advantage of the many services offered at the CEC.
