Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to and scholarship for the GU-EHLS program, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a native speaker of a language other than English. For 2009, speakers of Arabic, Mandarin, Pashto, Farsi, Dari, or Urdu are eligible for admission.
  • Have native language skills at level 3 or higher on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
  • Have completed university-level or equivalent professional education in the native language.
  • Have English language skills at level 2 or 2+ on the ILR scale.
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be able to commit to full-time day-time study for 6 months.
  • Agree to fulfill a one-year service commitment with the U.S. government. Note that all scholarship recipients must agree to fulfill this commitment. NSEP will advise scholarship recipients on job placement opportunities, but does not guarantee placement.

There will be 30 scholarships available for the 2009 program at Georgetown University. Scholarships cover the full tuition cost of $15,750 and a stipend of $11,000 for living expenses. Scholars will be responsible for purchasing textbooks (estimated at $200-400).

All scholars will receive health insurance coverage through the Georgetown University student medical insurance plan; however, scholars may waive (decline) this insurance if they have their own policy.

Scholars moving to the Washington, DC area for this program will also be able to apply for reimbursement for some relocation costs.
