Georgetown University established the Center for the Environment (CFE) in 1996 with a grant from the GU President’s Office. The CFE’s main goal is to provide an evolving forum for the discussion, dissemination, and awareness of environmental issues affecting all areas of scholarship, education, and service at Georgetown University and beyond.
To that end, the CFE provides faculty and administrative resources for the Environmental Studies Minor (Georgetown College) and the environmental track of the Science, Technology, and International Affairs Major (School of Foreign Service). The Center also sponsors and cosponsors events, including distinguished speakers, environmental films, and Green Square, and manages a small-grant program that supports student environmental research and education.
The first director was GU Professor Janice M. Hicks (now at the NSF) from 1996–1998. The second director was Professor Timothy Beach of the GU School of Foreign Service from 1998–2007. The current director is Professor Edward M. Barrows in Department of Biology in the Georgetown College.
