- Brief Description: Wood, Ceramics, and Nest
2007
This is my personal crèche set. This nativity scene is composed of a wooden carved statue of our Lady, ceramic figure of the baby Jesus, a real bird’s nest, and an Asian boy kneeling. Most of them are hand-me-down pieces.
The wooden statue of our Lady was left at the corridors of our seminary. It was just standing there beside one of the columns unclaimed for several months covered with dusts. Since nobody claimed it, I asked permission from my fellow seminarians if I could keep it. And it has been with me for five years. The ceramic figure of baby Jesus was given to me by a fellow seminarian. It was laying down on his table without any crib. I told him that it would be a good Christmas gift for me and I would surely provide its manger. And it has been with me for almost seven years. Its “manger” came much later. I found it when there was a storm here in the Philippines several years ago. The nest was blown by the strong winds and landed on the corridor of our seminary. Since then, it became the “manger” of the baby Jesus ceramic figure. The ceramic Asian boy kneeling was a for-grabs item of my novice master when he died last 2005.
I have placed all of them on my small prayer altar. It was only this year that I realized that they could be assembled into a nativity scene. This scene will remind me of the first Christmas and how the Babe and his mother draw me close to them as I continue my priestly formation as a Jesuit seminarian. It will encourage me to pray for my fellow seminarians and my formators (both dead and alive). And they will be enthroned in the small corner of my room, not just on Christmas but all year long.
