Brief Description: The 1855 Cathedral, designed by Augustus Welby Pugin was restored and substantially re-ordered under the directive of Bishop Eamonn Casey (1969-76). The work lasted from April 1972 until July 1973. The tabernacle tower was added in 1982.
Architect Info: The designer was Ray Carroll of Glencullen, Co. Dublin, and the supervising architect was Daniel J. Kennedy of Tralee.

Title of Piece: Blessed Sacrament Chapel

Brief Description: The bronze gates to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel are from the cathedral's first baptistery. The tabernacle recalls the story of the burning bush from the book of Exodus, chapter 3. The representation of the Last Supper (modeled after Da Vinci) is from the cathedral's old high altar carved from Carrara marble in 1907.

At the same time, they reflect an arched stained glass window located behind the viewer, which seems to hover beneath the Chapel’s star-studded dome, pouring Eucharistic images from above toward the Tabernacle below: manna, wheat, Host, Living Water, wind.

The hand-forged iron spire mounted on the tabernacle parallels the spire placed on the top of the church. The latter marks the sacred place of the altar while the former marks the sacred place of the Blessed Sacrament.
