Dr. Mark Maloof’s research focuses on a branch of computer science known as machine learning. Researchers like Dr. Maloof are concerned with developing algorithms that allow computers to learn through patterns and repetition, either in data sets or through user’s choices. A branch of artificial intelligence, machine learning has the goal of enabling computers to improve their performance based on experience.

Machine learning has a number of applications, ranging from common usages like email spam filters, credit card fraud detection, and search engine results to specialized medical field uses, such as diagnosis, bioinformatics and cheminformatics, and DNA sequence classification.
