Computer science becomes a powerful, state-of-the-art tool in the hands of Dr. Lisa Singh. She and her students focus much of their research on data mining, the practice of using algorithms to sift through vast amounts of data in order to detect patterns, relationships, and irregularities.
"Computer science can be misconstrued as a somewhat exact science. I enjoy it for exactly the opposite reason: because it presents numerous challenges, each of which has many paths to a solution, each of which have distinct advantages and drawbacks."
"Dr. Singh taught me to always share ideas, as well as how to create an environment conducive to such sharing. She treated me like an equal and patiently worked with me, never putting me down and always constructively helping me do good work."
What is the best piece of advice you could give to your students? Do not get frustrated when you make a mistake. Making mistakes is an important step in the learning process. Some of the greatest scientific and medical discoveries were results of mistakes.
