What do you regard as your greatest academic success?
The contributions of the students (undergrad and grad) who were once in my lab and are now teachers & researchers themselves

What is your idea of happiness?
Having people and work you love, and time to enjoy them

Who or what was the greatest influence in your life that led to your career?
My mom and dad, who wanted me to have the education they didn't have.

What do you enjoy about teaching?
I like having an excuse to tell people about what I find exciting. I enjoy how students lead me to see those things differently than I had before.

If you could change one thing at Georgetown, what would it be?
We'd have more small classes and even more students involved in research.

How do you have fun?
My husband and I have an old farmhouse (circa 1800) on the banks of St. Leonard Creek and the Patuxent River. My idea of the perfect day is a bit of kayaking on the creek, a "power" (actually not very powerful) walk through the nearby park, reading in a hammock overlooking the river, and then sharing a bottle of wine while we sit on the porch watching the sailboats go by.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to your students?
Work hard and play hard. Don't worry if you aren't sure what you want to do with the rest of your life. Enjoy finding out.
