Stephanie Bean, originally from Colts Neck, New Jersey, is working in the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience lab assisting Melanie Stollstorff, a graduate student, on an experiment investigating logical reasoning in children with and without ADHD.
“The research that we are doing has really never been done before," says Bean. "We are combining different factors to approach the problem in a new and different way. I really enjoy the fact that what we are doing has great potential to affect the field of cognitive psychology.” Bean and Stollstorff’s findings could prove to be helpful in understanding ADHD and the brain basis of behavior.
“Probably the biggest thing I have learned thus far from working with Dr. Vaidya has been the complexity of research.” Prior to working in the DCN lab, Bean had no experience with research, and never realized what a long and detailed process it can be.
Bean entered Georgetown with the intention of going to medical school after graduation. While she is not certain of what she wants to do in her future, she is confident that she will remain in the field of psychology, whether clinical or research-based. “The experience that I have gained working in Dr. Vaidya’s lab will be very useful in the future.”
In addition to her dedicated academic work, Bean is highly active in the Georgetown community: she was a New Student Orientation Advisor this past fall, she is a part of the Georgetown Admissions Ambassadors Program, a member of HoyaBlue, and also works a peer advisor in the college. In addition, Bean is a member of the Undergraduate Honor Council and tutors in the Academic Resource Center. Bean is also a Eucharistic minister.
In her free time, Bean enjoys playing tennis and is a self-proclaimed “huge Hoya Basketball fan.” She likes cooking and traveling, as well as going to the beach. She values spending time with friends and family, and especially with her youngest brother, Matt.
