Service-oriented Architecture
Dr. Brian Blake is best known in the computer science community for his work in the field of service-oriented architecture (SOA). SOA is a versatile type of software architecture that responds specifically to the need for inter-operable and efficient online data collection and transmission systems. Examples of SOA applications include web-based forms that you fill out when you purchase items online, or when you bank online. These forms store and transmit data as an interface between the business and the consumer, composing an essential, artificially intelligent line of communication.
SOA is an architecture rather than a software—a process rather than a product—making it uniquely versatile, usable with a wide range of computing and network systems. SOA is changing the face of businesses, converting traditional storefronts into web-based processes.
Dr. Blake serves as a consultant, developing SOA applications for MITRE. In addition, Dr. Blake has made a name for himself as a leader in the development of software that connects business communities, allowing them to share SOA applications. On September 14, 2006, he organized a Summit on SOA that took place at Georgetown University. The Summit included invited speakers from academia, industry, and government.
