Georgetown Launches Mathematics and Statistics Master's Degree

With the introduction of a new Master's program, the fall of 2007 was an exciting time for mathematics at Georgetown. Starting with a class of about 30 students, the Master's in Mathematics and Statistics heavily focuses on interdisciplinary work and non-academic applications, encouraging students to work with a variety of groups, both public and private.

The focus on taking mathematics to the outside world came in response to a recent study by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which reported that, “employers today cite an urgent need to prepare graduate students for scientific/technology careers outside of academia, in sectors of industry beset by significant and continuing shortfalls in the workforce pool.”

With this in mind, the department emphasizes a broad approach to mathematics and provides many opportunities for practical experience with consulting and internships. There is also a heavy focus on teaching students to communicate with outside professionals, showing them how to translate their knowledge from the world of mathematics to other fields and industries.

The only professional mathematics degree on the Eastern Seaboard, the program also includes opportunities for students to customize their studies through a wide variety of electives; instant and ongoing application opportunities with a consulting practicum and internship credits; and heavy interaction and mentoring from faculty.
