New Documentary from Linguistic Anthropologist Mark Sicoli
Whistles in the Mist: Whistled Speech in Oaxaca (Mexico): In this public television documentary from the series "In the Americas with David Yetman," Dr. Mark Sicoli (now on the faculty of Linguistics at Georgetown University) conducts fieldwork among speakers of a Chinantec language of southern Mexico who use a whistled register of their language for long-distance communication. This video is part of a documentation project funded by the National Science Foundation Documenting Endangered Languages Program and Program for Cultural Anthropology (NSF SBE 1126027). Dr. Sicoli was co-PI on the project which funded an interdisciplinary team to produce HD video documentation and a permanent online language archive of whistled conversations, experiments testing the intelligibility of whistled speech, and interviews with community members about the historical role of whistled speech and the endangerment of this special register of the Chinantec language in the community.
