Fall 2012

Dr. Joanne Rappaport

Congratulations to Professor Joanne Rappaport who was awarded the honorable mention for the 2012 James Alexander Robertson Memorial Prize from the Conference on Latin American History for her article, "Asi lo paresce por su aspeto: Physiognomy and the Construction of Difference in Colonial Bogota," appearing in the Hispanic American Historical Review.

Dr. Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer

Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer continued work with Siberian and Central Asian leaders this summer, doing field research in the Russian Federation and Kyrgyzstan. She was a plenary speaker for a conference on folk healing at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In the past year, she has entertained and helped Siberian visitors to the U. S., through personal friendships as well as the diaspora group Sakha Open World. This included access to archival collections at the American Museum of Natural History in New York (where she is a Fellow); and to the annual United Nations Indigenous Peoples’ conference. She plans to return to Sakha Republic (Yakutia) next summer, extending her collaborative work with Sakha scholar Uliana Vinokurova, with whom she finished a National Endowment for Humanities grant in 2011.
