Departmental Scholarships & Fellowships

The Department provides several types of merit-based financial aid to students:

Georgetown University Fellowship Awards consist of five years of stipend support ($20,000 in 2005-2006), full tuition support, and health insurance. There is no work obligation during two of the five years of support. These fellowships are awarded university-wide to a limited number of outstanding first-year Ph.D. candidates.

Arabic Department/Graduate School Teaching Assistantships offer a stipend ($17,510 in 2006-2007), full tuition support for nine credits per semester, and health insurance for five years. Students are required to work up to 15 hours of work per week for five years, usually as a Teaching Assistant to a faculty member teaching a first-year or second-year intensive Arabic course.

Preference is given to Ph.D. applicants for fellowship awards.  All U.S. and international students who submit applications for full-time enrollment by scholarship deadline are considered for funding. Upon completion of the application review, you will be notified by separate letter if you have been awarded a merit-based scholarship or fellowship from the Arabic Department.

Scholarships: Depending on the availability of funding, the Arabic department may offer a small number of tuition scholarships only. Such financial aid is based on an annual competition.

FLAS Fellowships: Eligible students may apply for summer and/or year-long Graduate Fellowships for Foreign Language and Area or International Studies (FLAS), which provide a stipend ($15,000 in 2006-2007) and full tuition support for the study of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish.
