Applications
Applicants for the joint MAAS/Ph.D. in Arabic program must submit a separate application packet to each program, and indicate on the Graduate School application form the specific joint degree program.
Program of Study and Degree Requirements
The MAAS/Ph.D. in Arabic includes a total of three years of coursework drawn from the curricula of the MAAS program and the Arabic department. This joint program is designed for students with an interest in the contemporary Arab world who would like to incorporate interdisciplinary regional studies into doctoral studies in the Arabic department. Successful applicants should expect to have completed a minimum of two years of intensive (5-10 hours/week) formal Arabic instruction before entering the program; that is, any applicant must place into Advanced (3rd year) Arabic, or pass proficiency upon entry.
Course work
Complete 63 credits of course work (21 courses-10 in Arabic, 6 in MAAS and 5 in the minor).
- Ten graduate level courses in the Arabic department:
- Six of these courses may count as the MAAS concentration block in “Culture and Society,” as well as towards the Ph.D. in Arabic
- Four of these courses will count solely towards the Ph.D. in Arabic
- Intro to the Arab World + 5 MAAS electives (not from the Arabic department) will count toward both the MAAS degree and the area studies minor component of the Ph.D. in Arabic.
- Five graduate level courses in a minor of either Linguistics or Islamic Studies:
- The Linguistics minor courses may be specifically in Arabic linguistics, taken within the Arabic department, or they may be taken in the Linguistics department, or a combination of both. Arabic linguistics courses may not double count toward both the major and the linguistics minor, but they may count towards either one. Students should discuss the course requirement distribution with their advisers.
Language Proficiency Tests
Students must pass, in addition to the MAAS Arabic proficiency exam [either upon entering the program or by the end of the first academic year], both the Arabic Ph.D. proficiency exam, and the departmental second foreign language examination
Time Limits
Students admitted to the MAAS/Ph.D. program are allowed seven years from matriculation to complete all degree requirements and to graduate.
