The following Research Assistant positions are available for the 2009-2010. Please note that preference is given to first-year CR students. Dr. Tom Banchoff
Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and, World Affairs
The RA will perform database work regarding questions of religion violence, and reconcilation. He/She will also provide assistance to Visiting Professor Charles Villa-Vicencio and perform other tasks as assigned.
Dr. Andrew Bennett
Department of Government
The RA will assist with the development of a book on why some of the proponents of the intervention in Iraq changed their minds and others did not. Duties will include gathering and analyzing materials from internet databases, books, articles, etc. regarding various groups’ thoughts about Iraq from 2002-2007. These groups include top Bush Administration officials, members of Congress, academics and pundits, State Department officials, and Defense Department officials.

Conflict Resolution Program
The RA will provide research assistance for a project regarding negotiated settlements, norms, and civil war termination. He/She will also assist with class preparation and perform other tasks as assigned.
Dr. Susan Martin
Institute for the Study of International Migration
The RA will assist in collecting and analyzing information on climate change and migration, based upon the hypothesis that climate change may exacerbate competition for resources, which may in turn generate conflict and large-scale displacement. The project will also examine climate change induced intensification of natural disasters, rising sea levels, and desertification as potential causes for population movements.
Dr. Katherine Marshall,
Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs
The RA will conduct background research for a book about faith institutions, as part of the Routledge Global Institutions series. Additional duties will include:
• Investigating roles that faith institutions have played with the UN in several specific cases, including Angola, DRC, and Cambodia;
• Conducting background research on the Community of Sant’Egidio for a teaching case study; and
• Performing other tasks as assigned.
Dr. Fathali Moghaddam,
Department of Psychology (2 Positions)
The RA will:
• Conduct research on intergroup relations, security, and democracy;
• Assist in the development of policies for managing diversity;
• Manage the class preparation process;
• Assist with Parents Circle; and
• Perform other tasks as assigned.
Office of the University President, Initiative Team
The Office of the President at Georgetown University has created a framework for developing initiatives that promote social justice work for the advancement of the university. The Initiative Team has developed a working group aimed to strengthen GU’s support for conflict resolution around the world. The Research Assistant will
• Research existing programs and faculty expertise at Georgetown University;
• Explore external models and parallel projects at other universities;
• Convene relevant stakeholders to contribute to project development
• Coordinate meeting and event logistics;
• Work with the team to develop communication and outreach tools; and
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

Georgetown Public Policy Institute
The RA will:
• Assist in the guided discovery of the World Values Survey. The data set will be used at the GU campus in Doha, Qatar next year.
• Conduct research, data coding, and data entry for a research paper on political bias in grading; and
• Conduct research and interviews regarding state electoral systems.

• Assist with the production and distribution of the program newsletter, website maintenance, and recruiting events and projects;

• Collaborate with program Directors and Coordinator to develop policies and projects; and

The RA will assist the professor in wrapping up three book projects: The Arts of Globalization; International Cultural Policies and Power; and United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization: Creating Norms in Complex World. The RA will

• Prepare indexes; and

The RA will provide assistance on a project involving leadership, accountability, and impunity in Africa. The project will address efforts to hold African executives accountable for HR violations as well as corruption.

The RA will assist with the collection and analysis of information regarding land, indigenous people, and conflict.

Program on Justice and Peace
The RA will
• Assist in the creation and development of two courses (Conflict Transformation and Expanding European Union) to be taught in Fall 2010 in Georgetown’s undergraduate study abroad program in Alanya, Turkey;
• Assist in the development of Subject Research Guides for “Conflict Resolution” and “Justice and Peace” on the Lauinger Library website; • Provide input, research, support, and administrative assistance for the course JUPS272-Conflict Studies/Social Justice in Spring 2010; and
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

The RA will
• Assist with background research for current projects—role of humor in conflict resolution, trauma and peacebuilding, and the professionalization of the field;
• Aid in the editing process of papers/publications;
• Conduct background research for classes and write case studies/simulations;
• Assist with expanding the work of the online Peace and Collaborative Development Network; and
• Perform other tasks as agreed.
Dr. Craig Zelizer
Conflict Resolution Program (2 Positions)
The RA will
• Contribute to the further development of the Peace Media Clearinghouse, a multi-media website in partnership with the United States Institute of Peace;
• Assist with research on best practice documents;
• Work on outreach and promotion of the Peace Media Clearinghouse; • Enter new materials into the database;
• Assist with the expanding work of the online Peace and Collaborative Development Network; and
• Perform other tasks as agreed.
