Master of Arts Program in Conflict Resolution

This summer, several Conflict Resolution students took advantage of opportunities to take classes, intern and travel throughout the world. Below are some of the things CR students did during the summer of 2010:

• Claire Anderson took courses at American University's Peacebuilding and Development Institute.
• Kristina Aronson studied Arabic in Alexandria, Egypt through Georgetown University's Summer Intensive Arabic Immersion Program. 
• Sarah Arkin interned at the State Department in the Bureau of Near East Affairs and continues to work there during the present school year.
• Leah Barkoukis went with the American Hellenic Institute to Cyprus & Greece.
• Tyler Beckelman managed humanitarian food aid programs in Zimbabwe for the US Agency for International Development.
• Ayca Guralp interned at Partners-Jordan, which is part of the large network Partners for Democratic Change based in DC.
• Walker Grooms interned at Fundación Pachamama in Quito, Ecuador where he did research on the Ecuadorian government's new program to financially compensate individuals and legally-recognized indigenous communities for forest conservation; a lot of his work was looking at how the program fits into the broader picture of the UNFCCC's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) framework and activities.
• Anuj Gurung interned for the UN Refugee Agency, which entailed visiting refugee camps in eastern Nepal.
• Sarah Jackson interned in Nairobi at Kituo cha Sheria (the Center for Legal Empowerment) and at the Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK).
• Adam Mellion interned through the State Department at the US Embassy in Conakry, Guinea.
• Seth Newton worked for the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown. 
• Ruzan Sarwar interned with the UN Development Programme.
• Patrick Scullin volunteered in Dharamshala, India with Tibetan refugees. He worked for the Hope Center, Common Ground, and for Volunteer Tibet.
• Shannon Zimmerman worked at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies and is currently in Tunisia on a Boren Fellowship to study Arabic and human security as influenced by culture.
• Laila Zulkaphil worked with survivors of the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
