The Department of Government's courses are divided among four fields - American Government (AG), Comparative Government (CG), International Relations (IR), and Political Theory (PT). Beginning in the Spring 2007 semester, all courses offered by the Department will contain a notation of their field in the Registrar's official Schedule of Classes. In addition, courses in the undergraduate Political Economy Major are designated PECO.
All Department Seminars (one of the requirements for a Government majors) will have a course title that begins "DEPT SEM."
Courses numbered GOVT 001 to GOVT 349 are considered "undergraduate only." Courses numbered GOVT 350 to GOVT 499 are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. All 500-level Government courses are "MA only" while all 700-level Government courses are "PhD only." MA students may take 700-level courses and PhD students 500-level courses ONLY with the permission of the instructor and his/her Field Chair (in the case of PhD students). 600-level Government courses are available to both MA and PhD students.
