Welcome. It is my privilege to chair the Georgetown History Department, a community of teaching scholars and students working together in pursuit of the historical understanding essential to life in the twenty-first century. We pursue innovative investigation and scholarly publication as part of a leading research university; we maintain a commitment to teaching as members of a top liberal arts college faculty. Distinguished scholars teach surveys of World, Atlantic, Pacific, European, Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern history, offering undergraduates diverse routes to gaining historical foundations. We provide a History major to students in Georgetown College and an International History major in the School of Foreign Service. Our M.A. in Global, International, and Comparative History (MAGIC) brings a historical lens to global affairs - a foundation for public service, for journalism and other professions, and for entrance to the most challenging doctoral programs. The Georgetown History Ph.D. educates skilled scholars committed to effective teaching, scholars combining deep knowledge about communities, regions, and nations with global perspectives - and with analytical emphases ranging from (and linking) politics and diplomacy to the environment, gender, and culture.
I am especially proud that we do all this in a personal way. In our introductory classes faculty members share their visions in lectures - and lead discussions, grade papers, and meet with students. Most classes for undergraduate majors are small, shaped by interactions among students and teachers. Graduate colloquia and seminars are opportunities for faculty and students to work together in pursuit of innovative understandings. We offer seminars, lectures, and symposia at which all are welcome.
Our dedicated staff, the directors of Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral Studies, the entire faculty, and I are ready to meet, answer questions, and move forward together in pursuit of history, education, careers - life. Join us.
