a skills training program that strengthens community activism and fosters engaged citizenship;
a forum for discussion and development of progressive issues and agendas;
and a unique networking opportunity for social change activists.
The Washington Peace Center
The Washington Peace Center is an anti-racist, grassroots, multi-issue organization working for peace, justice, and nonviolent social change in the metropolitan Washington, DC area since 1963. Its mission is to provide education, resources, and action for those working for positive social change and a world free from oppression. It works to foster greater collaboration among activist groups; bridge the gap between global, national and local issues and communities, and provide the material support to achieve these goals.
The United States Institute of Peace
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) provides the analysis, training and tools that prevent and end conflicts, promotes stability and professionalizes the field of peacebuilding. It is an independent, nonpartisan, national institution established and funded by Congress. Its goals are to help: prevent and resolve violent international conflicts; promote post-conflict stability and development; and increase conflict management capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide. The Institute does this by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as by directly engaging in peacebuilding efforts around the globe.
Search for Common Ground
Founded in 1982, Search for Common Ground (SCG) works to transform the way the world deals with conflict – away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving. SCG uses a multi-faceted approach, employing media initiatives and working with local partners in government and civil society, to find culturally appropriate means to strengthen societies' capacity to deal with conflicts constructively: to understand the differences and act on the commonalities.
Busboys and Poets
Busboys and Poets is a community gathering place. First established in 2005, Busboys and Poets was created by owner Andy Shallal. After opening the flagship location at 14th and V Streets, NW (Washington, DC), the neighboring residents and the progressive community embraced Busboys, especially activists opposed to the Iraq War. Busboys and Poets is now located in three distinctive neighborhoods in the Washington Metropolitan area and is a community resource for artists, activists, writers, thinkers and dreamers. Beyond being excellent restaurants, the Busboys and Poets locations host peace events, spoken word nights, film showings, and the Teaching for Change bookstore.
