During the semester following the completion of all Ph.D. coursework, students must pass an oral examination. All other preliminary requirements, including the Qualifying Review, the Second Qualifying Paper (QP2) and the Ph.D. language requirement, must be satisfied before the Oral Examination may be scheduled. The exam will focus primarily on topics related to the student's proposed dissertation. Upon the recommendation of the examining board, a student who fails the examination may resit the examination once. Students who fail the examination are not allowed to continue in the Ph.D. program.
