The Linguistics Lab is located on the 2nd floor of the Intercultural Center (ICC), room 201. Recently renovated, the Linguistics Lab provides faculty and students with access to:

The Linguistics Lab plays an important role in facilitating research in a variety of areas which reflect some of the interests of the Department:

(b) The Multimodal Discourse Laboratory (housed in ICC 201)

The Multimodal Discourse Laboratory was launched in 2001 thanks to a Graduate School Research Infrastructure Award and is in Phase I of its development. The Multimodal Discourse Laboratory provides facilities for capturing, editing and analyzing audio and video data for discourse analysis and other linguistic analysis. Currently housed in the Linguistics Lab, the Multimodal Discourse Laboratory provides access to digital capture equipment (digital camcorders, digital still camera, scanner) and several software packages for audio and video editing, analysis and presentation.

(c) The Data Acquisition Lab (housed in ICC 233)

The Data Acquisition Lab is located on the second floor of the Intercultural Center, Room 233. The Data Acquisition Lab provides facilities for phonetics and phonology research, as well as for conducting single or small group experiments or interviews (for example, response time research, interaction research, sociolinguistic interviews, small focus group research, moving window research). Equipped with a CSL and a palatometer, the Data Acquistion Lab also comprises a soundproof booth with omnidirectional and unidirectional professional microphones linked to a computer station, a mixing board and amplifiers for the collection and processing of data. A Power Mac G4 is available for experimental research and three PC workstations are also available in the Data Acquisition Lab for transcription and coding purposes.

(d) The Observation Classroom (housed in ICC 204a)

The Observation Classroom is located on the second floor of the Intercultural Center, Room 204a. Equipped with two cameras, an omnidirectional ceiling microphone, and lavaliere microphones, the Observation Classroom is connected to computer and video capture facilities in the Linguistics Lab to allow easy audio/video data collection, duplication and digitization. The Observation Classroom is designed for classroom research, or any other research in group processes. The Observation Classroom can be used for classroom teaching practica, and more generally to record the teaching of any class for subsequent analysis. The Observation Classroom is used for regularly scheduled classes. Eventually, the Observation Classroom may be used for distance learning.
