The Linguistics lab is reserved for students and faculty of the Linguistics Department (for more information see Access). It is available for use when there is no class in progress.
General Rules
The Linguistic Lab should be used with consideration for the needs of others and in ways that maintain a comfortable and functional work environment. To that effect, users are requested:
Sharing of resources and priority in using computers
To ensure that the needs of the greatest number of users are met, users are requested to take into account the following order of priorities:
General rules
1. Students are free to use the lab's computers on a first-come, first-served basis.
2. If another student requests the use of the same computer, the first student is requested to vacate the computer after a 2-hour block.
3. Work that cannot be done in other Georgetown University Lab Facilities has priority over work that can be done elsewhere (a student doing word processing, e-mail or web browsing should vacate a computer immediately if another student requests the use of this computer for purposes that cannot be met conveniently elsewhere on campus, for example, for experimental purposes. In this case, the 2-hour rule does not apply).
A number of workstations in the lab have specialized functions:
Speech Analysis Workstation
The Speech Analysis workstation (Macintosh G3) is reserved by priority for students doing phonetics and phonology research that requires the use of Signalyze, Praat and SuperAnova. Note that Praat is also installed on all other PCs in the lab. Two PCs in ICC 201 are also reserved by priority for students using PCQuirer for phonetic analysis.
Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Video Editing Workstation
The Dell Dimensions 4100 (Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Video-editing workstation) is reserved by priority for students working on audio/video editing, and whose work requires the use of any of the following resources: video capture equipment, CD-RW drive, DVD drive, Scanner, Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6, Macromedia Director Studio 8, Adaptec Easy-CD Creator, Adaptec Direct CD, SoundForge XP 4.5, Photo Studio 2.0, Director 8, Movie Star 4.2.3.Dazzle USB Digital Video Creator, Shockwave Multiuser Server, ArcSoft Photo Studio 2000.
Any student that is using one of these two computers for purposes other than the ones mentioned above is asked to vacate the workstation if a student needing these resources requests its use. The 2-hour rule does not apply in this case.
Unagi workstation
This station contains the Lab RA's documents. You may be asked to vacate if the Lab RA needs to use it.
Saving files on the Hard Drive
To avoid cluttering and fragmentation of the hard drives, students are requested to always save their work on a floppy, a CD-Rom or a zip disk, and not to leave any personal files on the hard drives. Video files in particular take up a lot of memory space and affect computer speed and should be saved and deleted after use. For longer term video- and photo-editing projects requiring repeated manipulations, please notify the linglab@georgetown.edu if you need to store your files on the hard drive for a specified amount of time. If you do not notify the lab graduate assistant, any personal file saved on the hard drive may be deleted at any time.
