Department of Mathematics

New Faculty members

The department is pleased to announce the addition of two new Assistant Professors,

Ali Arab earned his B.S. degree from Iran University of Science and Technology in 1999.  In 2000, he moved to the United States and pursued a M.S. degree in Mathematics and Statistics at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.  In 2007, Ali completed the Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Ali's research interests include: Hierarchical modeling of spatio-temporal processes with complex dynamics, Bayesian inference and computational statistics with focus on environmental and ecological applications.

Mahlet Tadesse received her doctorate in Biostatistics from Harvard University in 2002. Prior to joining the Department of Mathematics at Georgetown University, she served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania as Assistant Professor of Biostatistics. Her research focuses on the development of statistical and computational tools for the analysis of large-scale genomic data.

In addition, we are pleased to welcome three Visiting Assistant Professors,

Geoffrey Birky received his MA in Applied Mathematics in 1989 and just received his PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Maryland College Park. Prior to his doctoral work, he taught high school mathematics for 13 years. In his research, he has examined transcripts from Third International Mathematics and Science 1999 Video Study to examine how eighth grade teachers in the U.S. and five high performing countries discuss mathematics problems in ways that do or do not promote conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning.

Wayne Eby received his Ph.D. from University of Maryland in 2002, working in harmonic analysis.  He has previously taught at Temple University and University of Notre Dame.

Michael Raney received his Ph.D. in operator theory from the University of Oregon in 2002.  After graduating he has worked at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Virginia Tech University, and  Marymount University.  His current research interests are in systems theory.
