Research Assistant positions available at NYS Institute for Basic Research


Research Assistant III: Two full-time positions. Unique opportunity to gain research experience with high-risk infants in NICU and after discharge. Ideal for college graduate with background in developmental psychology or related field in interim prior to graduate school. Experience working with infants/toddlers preferred. The position involves helping to conduct behavioral studies on infants and toddlers in follow-up studies of high–risk neonates. Ability to work in a research environment and get along with others, to work both autonomously and in a group is essential. Research duties include analysis of data from videotapes, behavioral testing of infants, toddlers, and young children (from birth to 8 years), data entry, and other general research duties. Some work in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) required. Computer skills essential. Evening and weekend work may be required. Lab Coordinator: Temple University Infant Lab

The Temple University Infant Laboratory at Ambler is looking for a laboratory coordinator who has experience working with babies and young children and is looking for an opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research. The Temple University Infant Lab at Ambler, directed by Professors Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Nora Newcombe, conducts research on language acquisition, parent-child play interactions, spatial development, and memory development. Managing the day-to-day operations, the Lab Coordinator is responsible for developing research initiatives and research designs, recruiting research participants, collecting and coding data, conducting preliminary data analyses, performing literature reviews, and writing preliminary drafts of grant reports, conference abstracts, and manuscripts. Additionally, the Lab Coordinator manages the administrative duties, including the purchasing and replenishing of administrative supplies, keeping track of grant budgets, scheduling participants, organizing lab meetings, and planning events (arranging for visitors, organizing promotional events, etc) as well as supervision of Temple undergraduates and volunteers. This position offers those with a Bachelor's degree in psychology an opportunity to be a potential collaborator in research that will be presented at major conferences and in publications.

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Linguistics or related field.

Preferred Skills:
preferably six months experience working with children between the ages of 7 months to six years in a research setting; computer skills and proficiency with MS Office Suite and SPSS/SAS software packages, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to interact with a diverse population of program participants, excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and ability to travel to off-site locations that may not be accessible by public transportation.

2008 Wediko Children's Services - Paid Summer Internships

New Hampshire Summer Program (8-week Paid Internship)

Founded in 1934, Wediko Children's Services is a non-profit agency with over 70 years of experience dedicated to children and adolescents whose learning, social development, and self-direction are lagging.  Based in Boston, Wediko operates the New Hampshire summer residential treatment program on our Windsor, NH campus for 125 boys and girls ages 6-18 with serious emotional and behavioral disorders (SED).

One of the most exciting parts of working at Wediko is the diversity of professional training, including: special education, counseling and school psychology, research, social work, psychiatric and community nursing, and psychiatry.

A. Job Descriptions

1. Residential Counselors: As a part of a clinical team, work directly with a group of 8-10 children or adolescents with serious emotional and behavioral disorders (SED).

2. Special Education Assistants:  Plan and implement active, learner-centered language arts, math, and science curricula.  When not fulfilling the duties related to the classroom, Special Education Assistants join Residential Counselors in supervising a group of 8-10 children with SED.

3. Activity Assistants: Specialized staff with training in aquatics, athletics, and visual & performing arts, or other areas, create and implement active, learner-centered curricula.  Activity Assistants, when not fulfilling the duties related to their activities, join Residential Counselors in supervising a group of 8-10 children with SED.

Supervision and training are provided throughout the program by clinical psychologists, social workers, special education professionals, and licensed nurses.

B. Qualifications

Students must have completed at least two years of college to meet and master the job demands of a direct care position.  Other positions require relevant credentials. The desire and ability to work long hours on a staff team helping troubled children, at times under stressful conditions is also required. Previous experience with children or adolescents is not a prerequisite. Personal qualities are even more important - such as the abilities to work hard, the work on a team, be flexible, and use constructive feedback.  Meeting the physical demands of a rugged 450-acre campus is also required.

C. Job dates

June 27 - August 23.  All staff participate in lectures and case conferences during two weeks of orientation - one week before the children arrive, and one week after the children leave.

D. Benefits

Positions are paid, and include 750 hours of supervised therapeutic experience and training, room & board. An Americorps Educational Voucher worth $1,250 may be awarded to U.S. Citizens. All staff receive six days off during the 8 week internship.
