One of the department's brightest stars, William Godwin, is a John Kenneth Galbraith Scholar (awarded June 2005 from the Harvard Univ. Kennedy School of Government Social Policy Program). He is one of 16 students chosen nationally to participate in a week long seminar focused on inequality research.
He is also a 2005 Montgomery Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow awarded by The American Bar Foundation, a think tank for lawyer-scholars conducting sociolegal research. William was recognized for exploring the Cook County Criminal Justice System, American Bar Association, and assisting senior researchers with a research project dealing with major employment discrimination lawsuits in the U.S.
This year, William has been awarded two additional distinctions. He is a Truman Scholar, c/o 2006, having been selected from a pool of 75 students nationally, as a student with records attesting to and future interest in public service.
This past summer, he was named a 2006 Ronald McNair Scholar. This program, co-sponsored by The University of Chicago and the U.S. Dept of Education, funds a Pre- Graduate School program focusing on the skills, exposure, and experiences necessary for success in graduate school and academia. He will complete a research project with a faculty mentor on the role of 20th century human rights discourse on the changing political thought orientations of 20th century civil rights activists, for example, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
