After being nominated by a peer at American University, Department Chair and Professor Sam Marullo was recently selected as one of the 2006 award winners of the Mayor's Community Service Award. His commitment to service was recognized as "strengthening the spirit of service in the District of Columbia".
The Mayor's Community Service Award rewards and recognizes District volunteers for their outstanding community service. The Award is given monthly to one youth and one adult in the District and annually to one corporation, one organization and one District Government employee. The mayor particularly praised his role as the founder of the Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network.
The following excerpted from the official university press release:
Marullo, who serves as the board chair of the CoRAL Network, was one of 18 Community Service Award winners honored at the event. The awards were hosted by SERVE DC, the D.C. agency responsible for overseeing community service and service-learning activities.
The CoRAL Network promotes community-based learning and research among the D.C. area universities. The network provides training for faculty and students to work on social justice issues with nonprofit community-based organizations. Under Marullo’s leadership, the network has secured over $1.2 million in federal funds and $2 million in matching funds to help area universities build their capacity for volunteer community work.
During the last three years, CoRAL Network supported nearly 500 community-based organizations in the D.C. metropolitan area by matching them with nearly 10,000 students and 450 faculty members working on community-based learning and research projects.
