Chair's Greeting Fall 2004

Greetings from the Chair: Fall 2004

The start of a new academic year always brings about a sense of renewal and unbounded energy. We take on new initiatives, face new challenges, and our hopes are rekindled that we can make a difference. This year, we explore new initiatives in the continued development of our Social Justice Analysis concentration—taking on new sites for our study abroad initiatives operated in collaboration with the Office of International Programs and the Center for Social Justice. We face new challenges in our department’s latest efforts in creating a masters program in Sociology and Anthropology. And we continue to work to make a difference through our teaching and research to better understand the globalization process and to address the problems of poverty and oppression both here at home as well as around the world. We invite you to take part in these new initiatives, to contribute to developing new programs, and to take seriously the ways that we can use our sociological and anthropological imaginations to address the problems that confront our world today.

In this fall e-newsletter, we feature the latest development in our department’s efforts to globalize our social justice analysis initiative. We have begun the pilot programs that allow our student to undertake community-based learning while studying abroad.

By way of other updates:

  • New Student Representatives: The two new student representatives this year are: Mary Eileen Cunniff and Justin Shuster. Your representatives attend department meetings and give voice to student perspectives on department business matters. Please share your views with your representatives.
  • Anthropology search: An important ongoing matter for the department this year will be the hiring of a new anthropologist. This is a tenure-track position and we are undertaking a national search to find the strongest candidate that will contribute to our anthropology program and help it to grow.
  • Open House: We are planning an Open House for November 3rd, so that students and faculty can mingle and learn more about each others’ interests and upcoming spring semester courses. The Open House will take place from 4:30 – 6:00 pm in the Department suite, fifth floor ICC 550. All interested students are encouraged to attend.

As always, we would like to hear from our alumni—what have you been up to? Where are you living? What are you doing? To facilitate our communication, we have created a link on this website to enable alumni to post their news. We encourage you to go click on this link (make this a link) in order to post your news and to read what your fellow Sociology and Anthropology alumni are doing now.

We hope that your new (academic) year is off to a great start and we wish you the best.
