Chair's Greeting Spring 2004
Greetings from the Chair: Spring 2004
Spring has sprung here on campus and you know what that means—lots of sun-bathing on Healy lawn, blasting rock music across the quad, and senior Sociology majors scurrying about gathering data for their senior thesis project. The spring semester is well underway and students are engaged in research—in the D.C. community as well as in Lauinger library. There is also much new around the department and on our department website—I hope you take a few moments to browse around the site. You might especially want to check out the link to funding opportunities and graduate programs.
The big news is that the department has undergone a major facelift—new lighting, a new front office reception are, and opening of some space for a student lounge area. Please stop by and check it out! We are thrilled with our new look—and we only had to wait 16 years since our last makeover. The Department Open House on April 14th, 4:00 – 6:00 pm will be a great opportunity for you to stop by and chat with students, alumni, and faculty.
We are co-sponsoring the first annual conference on “Community-Driven Research and Social Change in the National Capital Region” on April 17th, from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. Students are especially encouraged to apply to present their research on community issues. Additional information and on-line registration and paper/poster submission procedures can be found at http://www.coralnetwork.org/.
I would especially like to welcome our alumni readers of this newsletter. We are especially interested to find out what you are doing and encourage you to post updates on your activities on this website for your classmates to read. Let me also encourage you to take a few moments to fill in the short survey that we sent to you via e-mail. If you haven't taken the survey yet, the survey link will be posted shortly. We have been examining students’ learning in the major as part of our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of undergraduate teaching and learning and we would love to hear your feedback based on your long term perspective on the value of your degree in Sociology or Anthropology.
We wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Sam Marullo, Chair
