Chair's Greeting Fall 2002
Greetings from the Chair: Fall 2002
Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology’s electronic newsletter. I am excited to report that the Department just adopted a new and exciting curriculum modification—the addition of a concentration in Social Justice Analysis. The Social Justice Analysis concentration will provide an alternative, optional pathway to complete the major and is based on the Department’s many community-based learning course offerings. There are many appealing features of this new concentration:
- It embodies an especially well designed developmental model, starting with a new gateway course, Social Justice Analysis Theory and Practice; integrating community-based learning electives; and ending with a year-long capstone community based research project in the Project D.C. course.
- It allows the opportunity to integrate community-based learning while studying abroad or during the summer.
- It helps us to better fulfill our Department’s vision, to “foster a lifelong engagement with questions of social justice” and to “promote ways of imagining and re-imagining the common good and encourage the use of knowledge and skills to realize a more just society.”
There are several other new faces and new activities underway in the Department as well:
We welcome Professor Tianshu Pan, assistant professor of anthropology, whose work focuses on political anthropology and in particular, urban development in China. We also congratulate Professor Pan and his wife on the birth of their first child this summer.
We also welcome Angela Bilia, Ph.D., as our new department administrator. Angela joined us last spring on a temporary basis, but now joins us permanently. Angela has already upgraded our newsletter by implementing this electronic version of it and has dramatically enhanced the department’s website.
We welcome two new student representatives, Alexandra Rollins (’03) and Mark Bissonette (‘04). They will be actively involved in helping us to advance our curriculum reform discussions this year and in launching a new revitalized Sociology Club. You may contact them at afr@georgetown.edu for Alex or mjb24@georgetown.edu for Mark.
The department will host an Open House on November 7th at 4:15 – 6:00 p.m. to greet new majors and minors and welcome back returning students and to explain the new Social Justice Analysis concentration.
The Anthropology major is now in full swing and we encourage interested students to check out the new Anthropology web page for more information or to come speak with Professor Brennan or Professor Habel about the anthropology major or minor.
Many of our faculty are or have recently engaged in new research projects, new writing projects, new community based teaching activities, or creating new programs. Check out all their new and creative work by clicking here and feel free to stop in and chat with them about their new work.
As you see, there is a flurry of new activity and much excitement around the department. Please stop by and speak with us about any of these activities or your interests in Sociology and Anthropology.
