The Social Justice Analysis is an optional track through the sociology major, to focus on the theories and analysis of structural inequalities. Courses have been selected not only because of their substantive focus on inequalities, but also because of their pedagogical use of community-based learning. We believe that it is important for students to have opportunities to learn experientially in both a local and global context. Since nearly half of our students participate in study abroad programs, we feel it is important to make such an opportunity available to them. Particularly in light of the developmental model incorporated into the Social Justice Analysis concentration, combined with students routinely undertaking study abroad in their junior year and the potential for interfering with normal programming in the major, we felt it important to be able to offer this developmentally sound opportunity for students that takes advantage of the global justice work being undertaken in other countries. We also anticipate, with great expectations, the increased understanding with which students will return from their study abroad experience and apply their cross-cultural experience with social justice work as they continue in the Social Justice Analysis program in their senior year, working in the D.C. community.
