About the Handbook

Welcome to Georgetown University!

The Georgetown University Handbook for Staff and Academic and Administrative Professionals contains information to help guide you during your employment with us. It includes information about:

  • Georgetown University’s mission and history; University policies and procedures that govern day-to-day work life;
  • What is expected of you as an employee;
  • Compensation and time-off information;
  • Health and safety issues; and
  • Services and facilities available to you.

Please refer to the Table of Contents to locate topics of specific interest about administrative and employment issues that may affect you.

This Handbook is presented for information purposes only, and supersedes earlier versions. Georgetown University reserves the right to interpret, change, modify, add and delete, or not apply all or part of its policies or the provisions of this Handbook, or any other policy, procedure, benefit, or program at any time and for any reason without prior notice. Additionally, the applicability of specific policies and benefits contained in the Handbook depend on your employment category. This Handbook does not contain all the policies and procedures, rights, and restrictions that affect your employment with the University.

For example, employees who are members of District 1199E or Allied International Union are also covered by the provisions of Agreements negotiated between the University and the Unions. Staff members who are represented by these Unions should refer to the appropriate Agreement for additional information. Information in the Agreements takes precedence when there is a discrepancy between this Handbook and the Agreements. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits or paid time off.

Greater detail on Georgetown’s employment policies is available in the Human Resources Manual which is available online at http://hr.georgetown.edu. Employment policies are routinely revised and updated. Your department may also have other manuals or memoranda that set forth expectations regarding your employment. In addition, other departments and areas of the University (e.g. Financial Affairs, the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action, University Information Services) maintain policies of which you need to be aware, as they may affect your employment with Georgetown University. Further information is online at http://policies.georgetown.edu.

Nothing in this Employee Handbook creates, or is intended to create, a promise or representation of continued employment for any employee or any legally enforceable obligations on the part of Georgetown University, its directors, officers, or employees. Employment at the University may be terminated at the will of the employee or the University at any time for any reason not prohibited by law, with or without cause. No representative of the University has the authority to enter into a contrary agreement except the University President or his or her designee. Any such contrary agreement must be in writing and signed by the University President or his or her designee, and must specifically cover your employment.
