Glossary of Terms
Academic and Administrative Professional (AAP) — An Academic and Administrative Professional (AAP) is an individual hired into a position that deals directly with the intellectual substance of the curricular and research functions of the University, advises on academic matters, or is responsible for other aspects of student life that support students’ academic success or supplement their curricular activities.
Emergency Employees — Certain University employees are designated as “emergency employees” for making possible our 24-hour operation. Each department will determine which employees will be considered “emergency,” which means that regardless of weather conditions, these employees must report to work as scheduled at all times.
Exempt Employee — An exempt employee is one who is exempt from coverage of the minimum wage, maximum hours and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938, as amended. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

Jesuit and Jesuit Education — A Jesuit is a member of the Society of Jesus, a religious order of men in the Roman Catholic Church founded by St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540. For over 450 years, Jesuits have been teachers and scholars, who opened more than 800 universities, seminaries, and secondary schools around the world. The focus of Jesuit education is choice that is informed, self-critical, and discerning (caritas discreta).
Non-Exempt Employee — Employees who do not meet the exempt standard as defined in the FLSA are non-exempt, and must be paid at least the minimum wage. Moreover, any employee who is paid on an hourly basis is non-exempt, whether or not his or her work meets the tests for exemption. Non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime pay.
Regular Employee — A regular employee is an individual hired into a University position that is expected to be ongoing.
Senior-Level Executive — Senior-level executives are hired as Executive Vice President, Vice President, Associate Vice President, or as managerial positions reporting directly to an Executive Vice President or Vice President.
Senior-Level Professional — Generally, senior-level professionals are hired into a professional position at grade level 13 or Level P and above, exclusive of those at the executive level.
Special Employee — Special employees are hired to perform assignments on an as-needed basis. Special employees include, but are not limited to, on-call employees, per diem employees, employees hired to work 10 or fewer hours per week, minor employees, and temporary staffing service employees.
Student Employee — Student employees are individuals who are regularly enrolled as full-time students. The student must be assigned to a student position and is normally scheduled to work part-time during the academic year. Hiring of Georgetown University students is handled exclusively through the Student Employment Office, Office of Student Financial Services. The Human Resources Department is responsible for employment of students who are enrolled in institutions other than
Temporary Employee — Temporary employees are hired to perform special projects, cover for absent employees, or meet additional workloads. Temporary employment status may not exceed six months in any 12-month period.
Term Employee — Term employees are hired into a University position that is expected to be for a fixed period of time longer than six months. Term status does not guarantee employment for the period in question.
