Professional Development

As an institution of higher education, Georgetown is proud of efforts to engage employees in the University’s mission of life-long learning. A variety of on-campus and onsite training and development resources are available to the University’s employees. Some resources are listed below. More information may be found online or from department managers.
Leadership, Management, and Professional Development
The Office of University Training and Organizational Development provides a range of workshops and consultations to help employees be more effective in the workplace. All employees seeking to develop themselves and their skills are encouraged to attend. Program costs are paid for by the University. Employees may register for individual workshops or enroll in a certificate program. Participants in the certificate programs must complete a series of workshops, including core courses and electives. A list of certificate programs is available online at http://hr.georgetown.edu/training_development.

Courses are offered in:
  • Leadership and Management: Explores core management skills and competencies in communication, performance management, group dynamics, team building, workplace ethics, negotiation, and collaboration.
  • Personal and Professional Development Series: Addresses career enhancement issues, teaches skills to make participants more successful on the job and at home, and enriches understanding of Ignatian spirituality.
  • Operational Training Series: Provides insight on the nuts and bolts of working at Georgetown through workshops led by subject matter experts who develop and implement the University’s policies and procedures.

Organizational Development consultations are available for leaders to assess, manage, and/or change the culture of the organization. Comprehensive OD includes analysis of culture and norms, leadership training and development, methods to modify and adapt culture and norms, feedback, evaluation, and further modification to develop a shared vision.
New Employee Orientation
A critical component for all employees hired at Georgetown University (except special and student employees), the New Employee Orientation seminar provides an overview of the University’s policies, procedures, and expectations. The half-day session also offers newcomers an excellent introduction to the culture and community of Georgetown University. Because the information is designed to help employees be successful in their new positions, orientations should be scheduled as soon as possible following the new employee’s start date. Managers or supervisors will notify new employees of orientation session dates and times. Call 687-2500 to schedule a new employee for orientation.
New Manager Orientation
Managers who are afforded the opportunity to learn about the University, our policies, and practices have an increased chance of success. The New Manager Orientation Program is a one-day workshop that identifies the core management skills and competencies required for successful supervision at Georgetown; helps new supervisors understand University culture and Ignatian Traditions, policies and processes, business management, legal considerations for supervisors, and performance management; and identifies resources to increase knowledge and understanding of the University’s best practices. At the end of each session, participants will develop personal training plans to further advance their skills and knowledge.

Computer Technology Training
University Information Services, Lauinger Library, and Dahlgren Memorial Library collaborate to offer free computer training classes to all Georgetown University faculty, staff, and students. Employees have the opportunity to learn new software and multimedia applications, including those involving instructional technology and those that employees are required to use in their jobs. Course topics range from an introduction to computers and operating systems to focused instruction on statistical software, image scanning, Web development, and word processing programs. UIS recommends that all new employees enroll in the New Employee Orientation course to get an overview of the software and policies for computing at Georgetown. Course descriptions, schedules, and registration information are available online at http://uis.georgetown.edu/training.
Tuition Assistance Benefits
The University provides tuition assistance benefits for the personal and educational development of eligible employees and their children. Although spouses are not eligible for Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) benefits, a discount is available for employees’ spouses for non-credit courses taken through the School of Continuing Studies and its Center for Professional Development, which offers a wide range of seminars and certificate programs.
