RENEW
Campus Ministry is bringing a program called Campus RENEW to Georgetown. RENEW is an international organization, recognized by the church, that promotes the formation of small faith-sharing communities. These communities would focus on the week’s gospel passage and on applying its lessons to your own faith life and even community service. A key element of RENEW is meeting once a week for an hour to reflect on how one can bring the message of the gospel reading to life before the next weekly meeting.

As a Catholic, I go to Mass and think about God. But I don’t really get a chance to vocalize my faith. Renew gives me the chance to do just that. Renew will give you the opportunity to get to know other Catholics willing to talk about their faith. The setting allows you to share and to learn from others. Renew gave me another chance to talk about my faith amid the hustle of the week. It also gave me a chance to learn from what others had to share. Reading from the Scripture is often taken for granted, but Renew gave me a new appreciation today for the words written thousands of years ago. Finally, each week Renew challenges you to put what you’ve learned into action – which keeps faith central to your life.

Dr. Mastroianni, the Senior Roman Catholic Chaplain here at Georgetown, asked me to be a part of Renew earlier this school year. I didn’t know what Renew was at first, but I accepted the invitation anyway. I took part in the first Renew small faith community this past semester, and I really enjoyed my experience. I feel like talking about my faith with others, many of whom had very different opinions than me, helped me to grow in my faith. I also enjoyed how close our group got to be by the end of the semester. Renew not only gives you an opportunity to explore your beliefs, but also to meet other Catholics at Georgetown. It gives you a chance to spend a little time each week in reflection, but it is not a big time commitment – like I said, only one hour per week. Our Renew leadership team met every Wednesday at 7.30am. I know that future Renew groups will definitely not meet at that time, but the fact that we- the leadership team – were willing to keep meeting, week after week, even at that time, should prove something to you: Renew is a great program, and you should consider being a part of it next semester.

Being part of RENEW is an opportunity to pursue your spiritual development at school amongst your peers. It is easy to fall away from God now, at school, during finals week, whatever. However, for some, that may not apply. RENEW is something people at all stages of their faith-journey can participate in. As a member of the former group, I can say that RENEW has not brought me where I would like to be yet, but I still have more work to do. I encourage you all to join RENEW, join us and join each other in growing our faith.

Renew is a program in which Catholic students can gather with one another and grow in faith and friendship through small core community groups. It is a wonderful way to find peace in the busyness of day to day life at school. Having been a part of Renew for over a year now, I can tell you firsthand how important these people have become to me. I look forward to seeing my fellow group members each week, and I am excited to have the opportunity to lead other students in coming semesters.
