Networking
Networking is a critical part of searching for a job or internship. It's a process of creating relationships that can lead to new opportunities. Start with your family. Do your family members know anyone who works where you might want to work? Does your undergraduate university have an alumni club in Washington where you could meet new people? If you are an international student, does your embassy offer social events where you might meet people? If you are open to meeting new people – in class, on the bus, in the grocery store, at a conference, at a baseball game, or just about anywhere – your chances of learning about new opportunities increase dramatically.
Increasingly, people are using social networking sites to find job and internship leads. Make sure you have a professional presentation online because this, too, could lead to new connections. Here is a small sampling of networking groups in the Washington area.
The Association of Women in International Trade (WIIT) is a professional association of members who share an interest and expertise in international trade.
