Admissions Requirements and Application Procedures

REES MA Program

Admission to the Master of Arts in Russian and East European Studies program is based on:

• completed Graduate School of Arts & Sciences application form (see below for link)
• official transcript(s) of the applicant's academic record that demonstrate graduation from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 average or better
• 500-750 word statement of purpose
• academic or professional writing sample in English (approximately 10-15 double-spaced pages in length with footnotes and a Bibliography) 
• three letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the general verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing tests (the GRE code for GU is 5244; CERES does not have a department code) that demonstrate an average score of 600 and 5.0 on the Analytical Writing Section
• TOEFL or IELTS scores (international applicants only; TOEFL code for GU is 5244) of 550 (paper-based TOEFL), 213 (computer-based TOEFL), 7.0 IELTS or 80 (iBT)
• application fee  

Language Requirement

Applicants should submit evidence that they have completed at least three years of study of an appropriate language of the region at the college level or that they are native speakers of one of the languages of the region. This level of language proficiency is keyed to the program requirement that students who are not native speakers of a language of the region complete two courses of advanced language study and the requirement in some courses that students conduct research in their language of proficiency.

Some background in the Eurasian, Russian and East European area or in related disciplines is helpful but not essential.

Application Deadlines

Applicants for joint degree programs should be aware that the joint department or school may have earlier deadlines.

Please note: REES MA applicants wishing consideration for CERES financial aid for Spring admission should have met the Fall 2007 admission deadline

For Spring 2008 Enrollment

• November 1, 2007 - admission to REES MA (no financial aid through CERES)

For Fall 2008 Enrollment

• November 1, 2007 - early application deadline for Law Center JD
• January 2, 2008 - admission to Government Department PhD for joint program applicants with consideration for financial aid through the Government Department
• February 1, 2008 - admission to REES MA with consideration for financial aid through CERES
• February 15, 2008 - admission to Government Department PhD for joint program applicants (no financial aid)
• February 1, 2008 - admission to Law Center JD program (final deadline)
• June 2, 2008- admission to REES MA (no financial aid)
