The Iraqi Refugee Crisis in Syria and Jordan

CIRS logoIn collaboration with Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM), CIRS has conducted a major study of the conditions and impact of the Iraqi refugee crisis in Syria and Jordan. The author of the report is Dr. Patricia Fagen, a senior researcher at ISIM.

Dr. Patricia FagenAlthough estimates vary greatly, international relief agency and the United Nations estimate that as many as 4,000,000 Iraqis have been internally displaced or have left Iraq for neighboring countries since 2003. According to the latest figures available, approximately 1,200,000 Iraqi refugees now live in Syria and another 1,000,000 live in Jordan.

Cover Iraqi Refugees Paper The ISIM-CIRS study examines the conditions of the Iraqi refugees in these two countries and also analyzes their impact on each host country’s social, political, and economic structures. In specific, the study examines the various strategies and policies used by the host countries to accommodate, absorb, or expel incoming refugees. Once settled in the host countries, what are the conditions in which the refugees are likely to find themselves? And, apart from geographic proximity, what factors have resulted in a disproportionate number of refugees finding their way to either Jordan or Syria as opposed to other countries neighboring Iraq?

The results of the research can be found in the Occasional Paper, Iraqi Refugees Seeking Stability in Syria and Jordan. Upon reviews and possible revisions, the study will appear as one or more journal articles in appropriate publications.
